What Is Canyoning?

When going on a well earned break or holiday in an adventurous location, most families stick to hiking, swimming, and biking as their go-to adventure day. But, there’s a great way to break out of that boring mould on your next holiday - GO CANYONING! Canyoning is a fun, thrilling sport that will add a ton of excitement to your next getaway.

This sport combines all of the adventurous activities together, making it the one-stop-shop for mind-blowing amusement. You’ll spend all day rappeling/abseiling down the waterfalls of the canyon, rope rigging, sliding down natural flumes, and swimming in crystal-clear canyon pools, and for the more adventurous there is jumping.

Canyoning is performed in mountainous areas that are far off the beaten track and can be in some pretty remote areas. In the summertime, there are roaring rapids and waterfalls. With the spring thaw and rushing summer rivers, canyoning allows you to descend by cascading down the waterfalls using a variety of techniques.

Importance of Having a Guide

Canyoning trips are a few hours long to days long depending on the tour you book. If you’re just starting out, you can go just a couple of miles. Canyoning trips are scalable depending on your expertise, but it’s always important to have a canyon guide.

Canyon guides are experienced outdoor lovers who know the ins and outs of the trails and equipment. They’ve been in a variety of situations and learned how to navigate each one. A guide is always thinking about safety first, taking precautions to keep the whole group out of harm's way. A guide will do this while making the entire adventure extremely good fun.

Your canyon guide will know the anatomy of a canyon and navigate using their knowledge and vast skills. Going with a guide means you’ll have the best experience, as they teach you the best way to canyon, without the trial and error.

Your physical fitness level needs to be in sync with the difficulty of the canyon. There are some cases where the canyon's terrain and height are less difficult, providing an opportunity for those who are not in great physical fitness to participate. Whereas some canyons take days to complete and of course your fitness levels must be greater.

Some specially designed ropes repel water, keeping it nice and light. Beautiful Places, Off the Beaten Track

One of the greatest reasons to take up canyoning apart from the thrill or the adrenaline rush, is discovery; discovering beautiful places in the world that most will not see. Originally discovered by our ancestors trekking downstream, or hiking to their next place of settlement, these caverns served as resting places for our fellow man.

The inside of the cavern or canyon is unknown and awaits you with scenery you have never seen before. The beautiful layers of rock sculptured and forged over time by water tell a story about the age of the earth.  The waterfalls plunge into deeply carved pools and mix with some of the most crystal-clear water on the planet.

To add to this, some canyons have places where the sunbeams shine through broken rocks, casting shadows on the sides, making colourful displays across the canyon floors. Rainbows arc their way over the tumbling water in the fine mist that swirls around.

Experiencing this nature is rare and can only be done by the sport of canyoning.
